Origin:  Diné [Navajo], Navajo Nation, c. 1890-1910

100+ years ago, this Diné weaver had wonderful artistic vision in creating this bold & beautiful abstract art design that will beautify any home. Although the hand-spun yarns are thick as is typical of the ‘Transition Period’ of Navajo weaving, they are pretty uniformly hand-spun and woven.  This is NOT a loosely woven and crudely designed 'pound rug' that often characterized the ‘Transition Period’ because Reservation traders tried to rip-off weavers by paying absurdly low prices by the POUND for the finished weaving.  Despite those unscrupulous conditions, THIS weaver was inspired to envision and spend hundreds of hours creating this stunning abstract art.  [W1101]

Dimensions:  it is typical & common for there to be minor size variations in Navajo Transitional Period textiles woven by hand 100 yrs. ago on a rustic upright loom. This weaving has minor size differences: 1 end is 39” wide & the other end is 40” wide; while one side is 62” long, & the other side is 63” long.
BUT DOES THAT MINOR SIZE VARIATION MATTER?  NO!  That variation does NOT detract from this weaving’s beauty and artistic value.  We treasure and admire antique Navajo textiles for their awesome beauty, their unique artistic vision & creativity.  We are awed in knowing their creation requires hundreds & even thousands of hours of dedicated hand labor using knowledge and skills inherited from Diné ancestors.

Condition:  professionally cleaned; no fade; no dye bleed; no moth damage; no toxic moth treatments; no odors of tobacco, chemicals, fragrance; no mold.  We are: non-smokers; we do NOT use chemical moth repellants. Our house is MOLD-free, fragrance-free, chemical-free, Covid-free.

Materials.  Navajo hand-spun, hand-woven sheep wool.  Warps: 5/inch; natural white. Wefts: 16-18/inch; natural white & grey, with synthetic-dyed dark blue, orange, red, dark red. Special note re weft colors:  (1) the light red is NOT fade; it is 'abrash'--it came from a different dye batch that produced a lighter red than the dark red.  The weaver clearly intended for her design to have the 2 different red shades.  (2) the black-looking colored weft designs are  actually very dark blue, synthetic-dyedSelvedge cords:  warp-end selvedge cords are handspun Navajo wool, synthetic-red dyed; NO side-selvedge cords.
