MATERIALS. Warps : white commercial cotton string; 9 warps per inch. Wefts: 4 ply commercial wool yarn in synthetic dyed white, black, red, gray; 36 wefts/inch. Selvedges: 4 ply commercial wool yarn, synthetic red dye. Tassels: 4 ply commercial wool yarn, synthetic red dye.
This weaving contains materials that are notable: commercial cotton string warps & synthetically-dyed, commercially-spun wool yarns, instead of traditional Navajo sheep wool yarns. Starting in the late 1800s, some Reservation traders encouraged weavers to use cotton string instead of hand-spun wool warps, and encouraged use of commercial yarns. Traders did that to increase their personal profits: (1) making a profit on cotton string & commercial yarn sold to the weavers, and then, (2) selling the finished weaving for a big markup over the price paid to the weaver. Based on surviving weavings, by 1930, it appears that weavers had stopped using cotton string for warps. Some weavers continued using commercial, synthetically-dyed, 4-ply wool yarns for their warps as well as wefts. Older commercial wool yarns, like in this weaving, are frequently referred to as “Germantown” yarns, named after Germantown, PA, which was a major U.S. wool yarn spinning center from which Reservation traders often purchased commercial yarns to sell to Navajo weavers.
