Comments. This beautiful vintage weaving was woven in 1985 by Rose Marie Sheppard who used the technically challenging and time-consuming weaving method referred to as “Raised Outline”. This technique results in various warps having a thicker layer of wefts that rise above the surface of other warps, resulting in a 3-dimensional texture to the weaving surface, with numerous vertical warp lines standing above the rest of the flatter weaving surface. With a well-chosen weft color palate, the raised weft/warp lines create a more dramatic and aesthetically pleasing effect.
The colors, design, and execution of this weaving clearly indicate that Rose Marie Sheppard is an exceptional Diné weaver with superb artistic vision. Her superb skill is further reflected by the fact that she finely spun the weft and wove the normal flat weft areas to a level of 56 wefts per inch! The raised outline warps typically have a weft count of 28 wefts per inch.
Near the middle of the weaving, you may notice an area with 2 horizontal lines of subtle color differences in the weft. Look closely and note that they extend all the way to the sides of the weaving. I believe this may have been the weaver’s distinctive way of creating a traditional Navajo weaving “spirit line”. Very creative!
